Pulse News goes social

The cataclysmically awesome and super popular iPad app - Pulse News, is about to get some serious Facebook lovin'! Pulse has been undoubtedly one of the top RSS reader apps to hit mobile devices so far, with it's elegantly simple multi-touch interface putting other news-grabbers to shame.

Well hoping to take this runaway success to the next level, Alphonso Labs are rolling out a socially flavoured update, bringing Facebook streams to the application.

As you can see from the screenie above, views are now tabbed between social and news streams. Currently, the only social network in play is Facebook, but Twitter integration is said to be 'in the works', a user request which apparently hasn't gone unnoticed. You can now scroll through Facebook status updates, links and your wall in true Pulse style, tapping to expand to comment or 'like' a post.

The new functionality provides a much needed alternative to the official Facebook iPad app, at least for checking recent links and updates. And it's done well, with exactly the same experience as if you were reading RSS on the flip side. The question is whether this social element will distract from the fact this is a news app. Only hands-on time will tell.

Oh and before you super-phoners go up in arms, a little-screen version of today's social update should be coming to iPhone and Android sometime soon, but an actual date is yet to be announced.
